The vintage denim deep-dive: how to find the perfect rare fit
A perfectly worn-in pair of vintage jeans is the holy grail of thrifting. They offer superior, heavy-weight cotton, unique fading that cannot be artificially replicated, and a level of durability that modern stretch denim simply cannot compete with.
But shopping for vintage denim online can be intimidating. Sizing has drastically changed over the decades, and navigating the vast sea of blue jeans requires a bit of insider knowledge. If you are hunting for that perfect, rare fit, here is your deep-dive guide to scoring vintage denim on Sellpy.
1. The 100% cotton sizing rule
Vintage denim (especially from the 80s and 90s) is usually made of 100% rigid cotton with absolutely zero elastane or stretch. 100% cotton shrinks over time with washing, and vintage sizing runs notoriously small. As a general rule, you should always size up at least one to two full sizes from your modern stretch-denim size when buying vintage Levi's, Lee, or Wrangler.
2. Check the granular measurements
Because vintage sizing is wildly inconsistent, you cannot rely on the tag alone. A vintage size 29 could easily fit like a modern size 26. Sellpy takes the guesswork out of denim shopping! Use our granular filter bar to search by specific measurements rather than just the brand size. Filter by Waist, Inside leg length, and Pants length to ensure the jeans will actually fit your specific proportions.
3. Hunt for the heritage styles
If you want the best vintage denim, you have to know which models collectors are actively hunting for.
Brands to search for: The Levi's 501 button-fly is the undisputed king of vintage denim. For a perfect 90s baggy fit, search for the Levi's SilverTab line. If you prefer a highly flattering, high-waisted straight leg, filter for vintage Lee Rider jeans or classic Wranglers.
4. Master the "rigid vs. worn-in" wash
The wash of the denim usually dictates how it will feel. Dark, unwashed indigo (raw denim) will be incredibly stiff and require a break-in period, but it looks exceptionally sharp and tailored. Light, icy-blue washes from the 90s have usually been washed dozens of times, meaning they are incredibly soft, comfortable, and drape beautifully right out of the Sellpy bag.
5. Buy for the hips, tailor the waist
The biggest mistake people make when buying vintage rigid denim is trying to find a pair that perfectly hugs their waist and their thighs. Always buy vintage jeans to fit the widest part of your lower body (usually the hips or thighs). If the waist is slightly too big, you can easily take them to a local tailor to have the waist taken in. It is an inexpensive alteration that results in a completely custom, million-dollar fit.
