The ultimate guide to finding the perfect vintage Levi's online

Finding the perfect pair of vintage Levi's is the holy grail of second-hand shopping. They have that perfect, lived-in fade, the denim is incredibly durable, and buying them second-hand is vastly better for the planet than buying new. Also, who doesn't love saying: oh these? They're vintage!

But if you have ever tried to buy vintage denim online, you know the biggest hurdle: the sizing. A vintage size 29 is very different from a modern size 29. To save you from the heartbreak of ordering a beautiful pair of jeans only to find you can't button them up, we have put together the ultimate guide to finding your perfect vintage Levi's on Sellpy.

1. The golden rule of vintage sizing

Modern jeans contain elastane (stretch) and use "vanity sizing." Vintage Levi's from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s are almost always 100% rigid cotton with zero stretch.

  • The Rule: You generally need to go up two to three sizes from your modern waist size. If you comfortably wear a modern size 28 in stretchy jeans, you should be looking for a vintage size 30 or 31.

2. Know your measurements

Because vintage jeans have often been washed, shrunk, or tailored by previous owners over the decades, the tag size doesn't always tell the whole story. The best way to shop is by knowing your actual measurements. Take your favorite pair of non-stretch jeans that fit you perfectly, lay them flat, measure the waist straight across the top and double it, then measure the inseam. Use these exact measurements with Sellpy's size filters.

3. Decode the W & L

Levi's uses a two-part sizing system: W (Waist) and L (Length), both in inches. A tag reading "W30 L32" indicates a 30-inch waist and a 32-inch inseam. Because vintage jeans have often been altered over the decades, the W/L tag doesn't always tell the whole story—measure your best-fitting pair flat: for the waist, measure across the top waistband and double it; for the length, measure the inseam from crotch seam to ankle hem.

4. Identify the styles: 501s vs. 505s

The Levi's 501: The iconic classic. Straight leg, mid-to-high rise, signature button fly. The Levi's 505: Very similar but with a zipper fly and a slightly more relaxed fit through the thighs — often more comfortable for wider hips or athletic legs.

  • Pro Tip: Check the small white wash-and-care label inside the jeans for a code starting with "PC9" followed by numbers (e.g. PC9 00505-4886). The first block after PC9 tells you the exact model—here, a 505.

5. How to shop for Levi's jeans on Sellpy

Go to our women's, men's, or children's selection and select the jeans category. Under "Brands," select Levi's & Levi Strauss. Use the size filter to input your vintage waist and inseam measurements. Check the condition—a little fraying or a faded knee just adds character to vintage denim.
